Transportation & Getting Around in Egypt

Air Travel

EgyptAir and several low-cost carriers connect Cairo with Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Alexandria. Domestic flights are affordable, typically $50–100, and save significant time compared to ground transport. Book in advance during the peak season of October through April.

Trains

Egyptian National Railways runs services between Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Aswan. First-class air-conditioned sleeper trains to Luxor and Aswan are comfortable and affordable, and can be booked in advance through the ENR website or at major stations. Second and third class are very cheap but crowded and less comfortable.

Taxis & Rideshares

Uber and Careem operate in Cairo and Alexandria — use them. They're affordable, trackable, and eliminate haggling entirely. In other cities, negotiate taxi fares before getting in, or insist on the meter. White taxis in Cairo are older and less reliable; stick with Uber or Careem wherever they're available.

Nile Cruises

One of the most iconic ways to experience Egypt. Cruises typically run between Luxor and Aswan (or the reverse), taking 3–7 days. Options range from budget feluccas to luxury five-star ships with pools and fine dining. Book through a reputable operator — the scenery between the temples is unforgettable regardless of budget level.

Getting Around Cities

• Cairo Metro: Africa's first metro system. Very cheap (5–10 EGP) but crowded, with women-only cars available.
• Microbuses: extremely cheap but confusing for newcomers — not recommended without a local guide.
• Tuk-tuks: common in smaller cities and neighbourhoods. Negotiate the fare first.
• Walking: fine in Zamalek, Maadi, and tourist areas. Be cautious crossing streets — traffic rules function more as suggestions.
• Car rental: possible but not recommended for Cairo, where traffic is chaotic and parking is difficult. Better suited to Red Sea coastal drives.
