Why Preparation Matters More in Egypt

Egypt rewards travellers who arrive prepared. Between visa paperwork, intense sun, unfamiliar currency, and a healthcare system that works very differently to home, the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one usually comes down to what you did in the weeks before you flew. This checklist covers the non-negotiables — the items that are genuinely hard to fix once you've landed in Cairo, Hurghada, or Sharm El Sheikh.

Pre-Departure Essentials

• Check passport validity — most airlines and Egyptian immigration require at least 6 months of validity remaining beyond your intended stay.
• Apply for your Egypt e-visa online, or confirm you're eligible for visa-on-arrival at your entry airport.
• Buy travel insurance with medical coverage — private healthcare in Egypt is excellent but not free, and evacuation costs without insurance can be ruinous.
• Get an Egypt eSIM before you fly so you land with instant data instead of hunting for an airport SIM counter.
• Talk to your doctor about recommended vaccines for Egypt, ideally 4–6 weeks before departure.
• Notify your bank of your travel dates so your cards aren't blocked for "suspicious" foreign activity.
• Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) for areas where signal can be patchy.
• Save emergency numbers and embassy contact details somewhere you can access offline.
• Pack a basic medical kit — pain relief, anti-diarrheal medication, and sunscreen are worth having on hand from hour one.
• Bring copies of any prescriptions for medication you take regularly.

The Two-Week-Out Checklist

With roughly two weeks to go, most of the heavy admin should already be done, so this is the window for logistics and health prep:

• Confirm your e-visa approval has actually arrived by email — reapply immediately if it hasn't, since processing can take 3–7 business days.

• Fill any prescriptions you'll need for the full trip, plus a few days' buffer.

Keep both physical and digital copies of: your passport photo page, visa approval or visa fee cash, travel insurance policy, vaccination record (if applicable), and prescription copies. A cloud folder (Google Drive, Dropbox) with photos of everything is a simple backup if your bag goes missing.
